A Finite Base Belief Revision System

چکیده

Theories of dynamic reasoning invariably are more elegant on paper than they are in an implementation. A major criticism of the AGM belief revision logic [Gärdenfors 1988] is that it relies on calculations using infinite belief sets to satisfy its postulates for rational belief revision. This has stopped it from being used in any practical systems for reasoning. [Williams 1993] proposes a theory of belief revision which uses finite theory bases to represent the belief sets, and an ordered partition of the base, called the ensconcement ordering, to represent the epistemic entrenchment ordering of the AGM model. Williams defines operators for expansion, contraction and revision which correspond to the AGM operators, and shows that these achieve a "best approximation" to the AGM logic, for a finite reasoning agent. We describe the implementation of Williams’ finite base belief revision theory, and discuss the practical issues involved in implementing a system which is guaranteed to terminate in reasonable time. We show some simple test cases, and give a brief analysis of the system’s performance on these examples.

Knowledge-Level Analysis of Belief Base Operations

Recent developments in philosophical studies of belief revision have led to the construction of models that are much closer to actual computing systems than the earlier models. An operation of contraction (revision) on a logically closed belief set can be obtained by assigning to it a finite belief base and an operation of contraction (revision) on that base. Exact characterizations of such bas...

Belief Revision in a Multi-Agent environment Recoverability vs. Priority to the Incoming Information

Since the seminal, philosophical and influential works of Gärdenfors et al. [1,2], ideas on "belief revision" have been progressively refined [10] and ameliorated toward normative, effective and quasi-computable paradigms [4-6]. Some of the main contributes have been the idea of “revision as transmutation of partial epistemic rankings” [18], “revision for finite bases” [13], the distinction bet...

Iterated Belief Revision: A Computational Approach

The capability of revising its beliefs upon new information in a rational and efficient way is crucial for an intelligent agent. The classic AGM theory studies mathematically idealized models of belief revision in two aspects: the properties (i.e., the AGM postulates) a rational revision operator should satisfy; and how to construct concrete revision operators. In scenarios where new informatio...

The Implementation of a First-Order Logic AGM Belief Revision System

Belief revision is increasingly being seen as central to a number of fundamental problems in Artificial Intelligence such as nonmonotonic reasoning, reasoning about action, truth maintenance and database update. This paper describes the first implementation of an AGM belief revision system. The system is based on classical firstorder logic, and for any finitely representable belief state, it ef...

Theoretical Foundations for Belief Revision

Belief revision systems are AI programs that deal with contradictions. They work with a knowledge base, performing reasoning from the propositions in the knowledge base, "filtering" those propositions so that only part of the knowledge base is perceived the set of propositions that are under consideration. This set of propositions is called the set of believed propositions. Typically, belief re...
